Reasons for Unusual Noises in Gearboxes and How to Address Them

During the gearbox assembly process, there were instances of minor磕碰. Due to the company's shortcomings in quality control testing, such issues are rare in most gearboxes. Solution: Based on the analysis results, carefully inspect the tooth surfaces of the relevant gears for any scratches or scuffs, and thoroughly remove any oil or grease from the tooth surfaces to ensure a smooth feel during handling. The protrusions are primarily located at the tooth tips and along both sides of the tooth profiles.

1. There is a knocking sound on the gear tooth surface, producing noise.

Situation: This problem mainly appears on the test benches at the assembly plants of complete machine manufacturers. This abnormal noise is characterized by a stable noise frequency, noise in one direction, and no noise when reversing. By calculating the relationship between the low-speed shaft speed and the abnormal noise frequency, the exact location of the abnormal noise can be determined.

Cause: Gearbox There is collision during assembly. Due to defects in the company's quality control during testing, it is rare to have Gearbox such problems.

Handling method: According to the analysis results, carefully check for scratches on the relevant gear tooth surfaces, wipe off oil stains on the tooth surfaces to avoid affecting the feel. Protrusions mainly exist on the tooth top and both sides of the tooth profile.

2. Abnormal noise caused by excessive gear pitch error itself

Situation: This problem is also reflected in the final assembly plants of complete machine manufacturers. This abnormal noise is characterized by a stable noise frequency and noise in both directions.

Cause: Abnormal noise caused by excessive variation in adjacent gear pitch due to gear processing. The problem gear can be identified through the gear detection report based on the speed ratio relationship.

Handling: Except for removable high-speed shafts, on-site handling is not possible and the parts must be returned to the company for replacement or repair.

3. Abnormal noise caused by friction interference

Situation: Gearbox The probability of this problem occurring is high. Difficulty or inability to turn, friction noise during testing. Generally, the wind field is caused by interference between the oil throw ring and the end cover, accompanied by abnormal heating of related parts.

Handling method: Identify the parts causing friction interference and repair or tighten those parts.

4. Abnormal noise caused by bearing issues

Situation: The noise is buzzing and fast in frequency, gear tooth surfaces check out normal, and the gear is not the problem calculated by speed ratio, so it is very likely that the bearing has issues.

Cause: Dents on the bearing inner ring raceway or roller surface can cause unstable bearing operation and produce abnormal noise.

Handling method: Carefully inspect the bearing raceways and rollers, and replace the bearing if there are problems.

5. Abnormal noise caused by long-term parking and gear corrosion

Situation: One tooth of a pair of gears has a long strip-shaped corrosion mark, while other teeth are intact.

Cause: Gearbox Long-term parking causes rust on the tooth surface, leading to unstable operation and abnormal noise.

Handling method: This rust cannot be removed, it can only be polished with an oil stone and then treated further.

6. Non- Gearbox self-caused abnormal noise

Situation: Noise appears near the main shaft at the low-speed end or near the brake disc at the high-speed end. After checking Gearbox all parts are intact, abnormal noise still exists, or the noise frequency is not proportional to the speed.

Cause: The hub or main shaft bearing at the low-speed end may have problems, and the coupling or motor at the high-speed end may have alignment deviation.

Handling: Repeatedly check Gearbox and confirm Gearbox that there are no problems, then it can be judged that other parts have issues, and the complete machine manufacturer can be asked to find the potentially problematic parts.
