The Importance of Gearbox Cleanliness

Gearboxes are widely used in electric motors and are frequently employed in wind turbine systems—they serve as critical mechanical components, primarily tasked with transferring the power generated by wind turbines to the generator, enabling it to achieve the necessary rotational speed. Typically, wind turbines operate at very low speeds, far below what’s required for efficient electricity generation. To bridge this gap, gearboxes utilize their gear ratios to significantly increase the rotational speed, which is why the gears within a gearbox are also referred to as "speed-increasing gears." Now, let’s explore together the importance of gearbox cleanliness!
Gearbox Widely used in electric motors and frequently employed in wind turbine systems, it serves as a critical mechanical component whose primary function is to transmit the power generated by wind force from the wind turbine to the generator, enabling the system to achieve the necessary rotational speed. Typically, wind turbines operate at very low speeds—far below what’s required for efficient electricity generation by the generator—and this is where the mechanism comes into play to bridge the gap. Gearbox Achieved through the speed-increasing action of gear pairs, therefore Gearbox Gears are also known as speed increasers—so, let’s explore them together below. Gearbox The importance of cleanliness!

Gearbox It serves the following purposes.
1. Acceleration and deceleration—commonly known as the gearbox.
2. Change the direction of transmission. For example, two sector gears can be used to transfer force perpendicularly to another rotating shaft.
3. Adjusting Torque: Under the same power conditions, the faster the gear rotates, the smaller the torque applied to the shaft—and vice versa, the slower the gear turns, the greater the torque becomes.
4. Clutch Function: By disengaging two originally meshed gears, the clutch achieves the purpose of separating the engine from the load—for example, in applications like brake clutches.
5. Power distribution. For example, an engine can drive multiple follower shafts via the gearbox’s main shaft, enabling a single engine to power multiple loads simultaneously.
Various factors contributing to reduced cleanliness in gearboxes
1. Poor cleanliness of the lubricating oil used in the gearbox
This is the direct cause of the decline in cleanliness.
As a result, when Gearbox When work begins, lubricating oil enters the lubrication lines and is distributed to each lubrication point. Unfortunately, impurities in the oil also travel along with it, eventually reaching the meshing and bearing areas—and ultimately shortening their lifespan. Therefore, it’s recommended to filter the oil using a dedicated oil filter before putting it into use.
2. Iron chips generated during the machining of parts were not cleaned up thoroughly.
On the other hand, during processing, the next-step operator inadvertently failed to remove metal chips from the component, resulting in defects such as pits and scratches on its surface. Additionally, because metal chips in certain areas were particularly difficult to clean, debris like iron particles ended up accumulating inside the oil holes. Gearbox After operation, it is carried into the working area via lubricating oil, thereby damaging the components.
3. After acid cleaning, the oil passages undergo further processing such as welding.
After acid cleaning the oil lines, welding is not permitted. Welding generates impurities that can enter the pipelines and subsequently circulate throughout the lubrication system along with the oil. Gearbox 。
4. Perform post-processing on selected parts of the assembled finished product. The principle is the same as in (3).
5. After parts are cleaned, they are carelessly stored and left lying freely. As a result, dust and other foreign particles can get onto the critical surfaces of the parts, compromising their mating dimensions.
6. Poor sealing performance. In the design phase, V-shaped dust seals can be used for the input and output shafts; during manufacturing, the surface roughness of the shafts can be improved.
7. The coating is not heat-resistant. Gearbox When operating under high-temperature conditions, the coating on the inner wall of the housing is not heat-resistant, causing it to peel off and contaminate the lubricating oil. Meanwhile, peeling of the coating on the outer wall of the housing can negatively impact its appearance.
8. Sealant dripped into the person’s box. If excessive sealant is applied to gear mating surfaces and other joint areas, it may flow into the housing—or even worse, get mixed into the lubricating oil—after the enclosure is closed or the lid is secured.
